Senior Staff Member
“A Safety Culture is not just an attitude toward “safety,” it
is a cultural preference for formality of operations that manifests
itself in non-safety related ways of working.”
My professional work and research at the
Breckenridge Institute focus on the relationship between
building a Safety Culture, increased organizational productivity,
and the role of employees’ personality
type in understanding and reducing injury rates. Creating a
Safety Culture where employees see the value-added of environment,
safety, and health principles and practices is part of a larger “cultural” attitude
toward formality of operations and reporting potential safety
incidents before they occur. My research and experience
have shown that there is no inherent contradiction between
developing a Safety Culture and obtaining exceptional organizational
performance – the key is to pursue both together at the
same time. My professional focus will continue to be on improving
human performance and reducing environmental, safety, and health
incidents within the context of organizational culture.
