Breckenridge Type Indicator™(BTI™)

The BTI™ is a psychometrically validated assessment tool designed to help identify key elements of managers’ and staff members’ personality using the nine personality types of the Breckenridge Enneagram™. The Breckenridge Enneagram™ integrates the original work of Claudio Naranjo; Maslow’s psychology and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs; and a rigorous approach to psychometric analysis and empirical research. The Breckenridge Enneagram™ is set apart from other approaches to the Enneagram by its focus on a naturalistic, scientific view of personality assessment and psychological processes that are linked to modern advances in the neurosciences. The BTI™ can be used for both personal and professional applications, but it is especially effective when used as the basis for professional coaching, leadership development, or team building exercises. Organizations are collective-cultural entities that are led, managed, and changed one person at a time. Studies have shown that people who possess emotional intelligence and self-knowledge are often twice as successful as those who possess only high levels of intellectual intelligence. A person’s level of self-awareness and self-control is an indicator of their openness to feedback, change, and their ability to succeed professionally, especially when under stress. In your professional life, a better understanding of your personality using the BTI™ will help identify decision-making bias and predictable errors in judgment in both strategic and tactical issues. The BTI™ can be administered using the two reports described below.

  • BTI™ report measures and describes the nine Enneagram types
  • BTI™ Plus report measures and describes the nine Enneagram types and the three Somatic Instincts

When used in your personal life, the BTI™ allows you to identify underlying patterns of behavior that frustrate and undermine healthy relationships with friends and family members.

Business Applications

The Breckenridge Institute® uses the BTI™ instrument in training programs and publicly available workshops in combination with Michael Goldberg’s book, The 9 Ways of Working. Here’s an excerpt from the back cover of Michael’s book. “The 9 Ways of Working introduces the nine personality types of the Enneagram, a classic, highly powerful approach to work and life. Each of the Enneagram’s nine types has a distinct worldview that determines how they think, what they want, and why they act the way they do. You’ll recognize the personality types of the people you work with – colleagues, clients, bosses – as well as your own…. Drawing on twenty-five years of teaching and consulting, Michael Goldberg’s rich descriptions catch the ‘aha!’ of each style with insightful anecdotes and real-life stories. He shows how each style is likely

to connect with or miss the others, what kind of leadership is right for certain situations, and how each style makes important decisions and gets work done. You’ll see the special gifts and talents of each style, their limits and blind spots, and when they will shine and when they will wilt. The 9 Ways of Working is packed with practical tips and cautions for each style and for working with each style.” The 9 Ways of Working is available world-wide on websites like Amazon.com or at your local bookstore
